KOMPAN honoured with Red Dot Design Award 02-Sep-08
The KOMPAN Story Makers playground equipment has been recognised by the Red Dot Design Award committee with an honourable mention for new Product Design in 2008. This is the second major International Design Award for Story Makers in recent months, after winning top honours from the French Janus de l’Industrie award committee last fall.
The Story Makers concept combines the traditional climbing, sliding and balance activities of children aged 2-6 with theme and role play. The equipment offers interchangeable themed fronts that may be adapted according to the needs and wishes of users. The themed fronts allow children to play in a variety of different universes – one minute they’re pirates on a pirate ship, the next they’re playing in a jungle.
“The product gives the possibility for change, which fosters creativity and helps ensure that playgrounds remain dynamic and continuously interesting for children,” says Development Manager Niels Julskjær. “The design challenge was to create a colourful and challenging cartoon universe without compromising on safety or durability, and I think the award committee recognized the difficulty of the task and the success we were able to meet with the finished product.”
This year, 3,203 new products from 51 countries submitted their designs to the Red Dot competition, and 50 “Best of the Best” winners and 137 honourable mentions were awarded. The honourable mentions were given for the first time in 2008 to those products which distinguished themselves with particularly successful design details. KOMPAN will be honoured with the other recipients at The Essen Opera House in Germany on 23 June 2008. Story Makers will also be on exhibition from 24 June to 27 July 2008 in the Essen Red Dot Design Museum on the premises of the ‘ZecheZollverein’ World Cultural Heritage Site.
